Sacred Fools Theater Company presents S*x & Imagining, the story of a struggle for sexual dominance between a man and a woman. The woman picks up a hitchhiker whose car has broken down on the road to a remote lake house. She takes him to the house to use the phone, but the phone doesn't work—and then the games begin.
REVIEW BY Beverly Hills Outlook:
On a warm summer’s night, she sat in her living room staring at a photo of a man. Instantly, the photo came to life, looked back at her, reached out for her, and started kissing her…and that was the beginning of JP Allen’s new play aptly titled "Sex & Imagining." presented at The Sacred Fools Theater, one block west of Vermont off Melrose.
In the next scene she is on a dark country road in a convertible accompanied by a hitchhiker (the same man she was looking at in the photo, thereby implying a familiarity, or the possibility that he is just a sexual fantasy come to life) she had just picked up. They chat, she argues about a radio talk show and he backs down. She says that she is going to a party at the lake and insists that he join her. He is reluctant, but she cajoles him. They get to the house, but he is still uncomfortable …he wants to leave. He sounds and acts like a scared girl, as she gets more and more into to the dominant role. She wants him…and now the tables are turned again and again…and again.
As the scenes changed, it unfolded like a boxing match. He throws a punch to the jaw, then she lands an uppercut, and then the gong sounds for the next round.
Allen’s play has an animal sexuality as its theme, and an animal sexuality is present in its realization. The changing of the roles kept the drama involving and unpredictable.
Adam Bitterman is David, played with cold emotion, expressed fear, wit, and just enough animal seductiveness to make his role believable. Yvonne Fisher is Elise and she brings her own sexuality to the role of first being the seducer and then being seduced.
Michael Franco produced and directed this intriguing play by bringing the most intimate desires of his players out in the open, while keeping the audience guessing. Who is the hitchhiker? Did she know him before? Is she going to a party, or is she the party? What is actually being revealed and what is pure sexual fantasy? Humm…
The set, by Jeff G. Rack includes the frame of a convertible that is wheeled onto the stage each time that it is used. The headlights are made of buckets and you can see inner workings of the car. The other part of the set is the main room at the house with just enough furniture to move the characters from place to place.
If you would like to peek into the games people play and see good acting then this play is certainly worth the drive over to Vermont. The play will be at the Sacred Fools Theatre, Wednesday and Thursday nights at 8:00 P.M. until May 3. There is a $5.00 parking fee in a lighted parking lot and seats are not reserved. Pride - Movie with Terrance Howard & Bernie Mac
The year is 1973, and Jim Ellis (Terence Howard), a college-educated African-American, can’t find a job. Driven by his love of competitive swimming, Jim fixes up an abandoned recreational pool hall in a Philadelphia slum with the help of Elston (Bernie Mac), a local janitor. But when the pool hall is marked for demolition, Jim fights back – by starting the city’s first African-American swim team. Recruiting troubled teens from the streets, Jim struggles to transform a motley team of novices into capable swimmers – all in time for the upcoming state championships. But as racism, violence and an unsympathetic city official threaten to tear the team apart, Jim must do everything he can to convince his swimmers that victory, both in and out of the pool, is within their reach…

The way an actor sounds is as important as how he looks, and Terrence Howard, given the force and directness of most of his characters, has a way of catching you off guard with what a delicately intense, satin-soft instrument his voice is. His gaze may be steady as a rock, but when he talks, there's a hint of a quaver — almost a shadow memory of tears. In Hustle & Flow, he gave that dime-store Memphis pimp a lazy, caressing smokehouse drawl, the kind that could nudge an invitation into a threat (or vice versa). Now, in Pride, a strategical gearshift of a movie set in Philadelphia in 1974, he takes on the role of one of those inspirational tough-love sports coaches, and Howard, once again, commands through quiet, summoning the gentle music of a man who is literally trying to find his power as he speaks. (Or maybe the fact that he's quiet is the real sign of power.) That tremulous baritone isn't weak; it's what makes Howard's strength human. He uses it to invest the film with so much casual discovery and verve that it's as if this sort of role had never been invented before.
The actor wears long sideburns, a domesticated guidance-counselor Afro, and the inevitable array of plaid jackets and slacks to play Jim Ellis, a real-life swim coach (the film is based on a true story) who, in the early '70s, founded the Philadelphia Department of Recreation swimming team. After being turned down for a job at a local white high school, Ellis wanders into the Marcus Foster Recreation Center. The place is as junky and useless as something out of Escape From South Philly — it's a playground of trashed dreams — and the kids shooting hoops on the netless outdoor court razz him like he's some uptight Negro alien. Inside, there's a swimming pool, but even that's overwhelmed by the clutter of abandonment. The degraded setting is the inner city in limbo, caught between the twilight of the civil rights era and the dawn of hip-hop, and that blasted physical space works for the movie. Pride really is about the audacity of hope. It's not that Ellis has to sow these kids with the values of a noble institution. He has to create the institution, building it from the ragged ground up, and that, along with Howard's reflective, almost melancholy performance, makes Pride more organic than the usual cookie-cutter sports-montage movie.
As Ellis molds the ghetto kids into a swim team, the film isn't exactly big on showing you the nuts and bolts of how they learn the butterfly stroke. I would have liked more detail, but where the director, Sunu Gonera, is shrewd is in parsing, from every angle, the emotions of the title. When the P.D.R. crew face off against a privileged white team (their coach is played by a convincingly jerky Tom Arnold), they botch the meet by messing around, and you feel the wounded arrogance of their ill-disciplined antics. By the end, of course, they're oozing self-respect. Bernie Mac, as the rec center's janitor, earns laughs by turning gibes into folk wisdom. Pride doesn't have much surprise, but it's a formula picture of genuine feeling, with Terrence Howard proving once again that he wouldn't know how to keep it less than real. B+
